HURRICANE WATCHES AND WARNINGS

TROPICAL STORM WATCH:
Tropical Storm conditions are possible in the specified area of the watch, usually within 48 hours.
TROPICAL STORM WARNING:
Tropical Storm conditions are expected in the specified area of the warning, usually within 36 hours.
HURRICANE WATCH:
Hurricane conditions are possible in the specified area of the watch, usually within 48 hours. During a Hurricane Watch, prepare to take immediate action to protect your family and property in case a Hurricane Warning is issued.
HURRICANE WARNING:
Hurricane conditions are expected in the specified area of the warning, usually within 36 hours. Complete all storm preparations and evacuate if directed by local officials.

COMMON TERMS:

MANDATORY EVACUATION is a mandate by the Governor for requiring evacuation of everyone within a certain area or zone.
VOLUNTARY RELOCATION is a request to begin evacuation. Generally, the request comes during the threat of a hurricane. It is not required that persons leave but it is strongly recommended that you begin preparations.
TROPICAL DEPRESSION is a tropical cyclone in which the maximum sustained winds are less than 38 miles per hour
TROPICAL STORM is a tropical cyclone in which the maximum sustained winds are greater than 38 mph and less than 73 miles per hour.
HURRICANE is a tropical cyclone in which the maximum sustained winds are greater than 73 miles per hour.
HURRICANE SURGE is a large dome of water sweeping across the shoreline near the site of where a hurricane makes landfall. The surge, including strong wave action, is devastating and is a great threat to life and property.
